About the event
As the Kashmir Shawl traveled through the eastern hemisphere, they were not introduced to Europe until the late 1700s. After French Emperor and military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, presented Empress Josephine with a Kashmir Shawl, it quickly became a status symbol and a desirable gift amongst women throughout Europe. Many famous figures, such as Marie Antoinette of France, were rarely seen without a shawl draped or tied around them. The keenness of these accessories grew to such an extent that many women ordered their royal tailors to sew their collection of shawls into dresses that could be worn while simultaneously draping another shawl around their body.
